Our salmon
-
Superior salmon is raised on our farms in Wisconsin and Indiana in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). This innovative method gives our team full control over the entire life cycle of our salmon, from hatch to harvest. RAS is a closed-loop system that is remarkably resource efficient, better for fish health and minimally impactful to the surrounding environment. We filter and recycle 99.9% of our water and capture 100% of our waste, upcycling the valuable nutrients and applying them as natural fertilizer to surrounding farmland. Superior salmon provides a pristine, healthy and delicious alternative to imported Atlantic salmon farmed in ocean net pens.
-
Superior has researched the most nutritionally optimal feed for our salmon and leads the industry in our commitment to sourcing the highest quality ingredients. Our feed mix is proprietary and uses non-GMO and certified organic products whenever possible. We also use marine sources of fat and protein to maximize the health of the fish, resulting in salmon with two times the EPA and DHA omega-3s per serving of any other salmon.
-
Our land-based, closed-loop system gives us full control over the entire life cycle of the salmon and the environment in which it's raised. This means there are no pathogens or diseases present in our water and fish stocks. This is in stark contrast to traditional ocean net pen salmon farms, which often have to treat their fish with synthetic additives to control their health. Superior salmon is independently lab tested and certified to have zero antibiotics, hormones, pesticides, heavy metals, microplastics or neurotoxins.
-
Superior salmon is proudly a product of the USA. We raise our fish in the heart of the Midwest, and all of our processing and distribution partners are located here as well. Our salmon is raised closer to home, doesn't have to travel thousands of miles and is in market within days of harvest. The result is a superior product that is higher quality and more nutrient dense.
-
Superior salmon offers both fresh and frozen products. We harvest our salmon weekly, and the fresh fish is shipped through distribution to restaurants and retailers across the country. We also offer frozen fillets and portions on our website for consumers, and to restaurants and retailers who want to feature those products on their menus or in store. All frozen products are processed within days of harvest with cutting-edge technology, preserving the highest quality and freshest flavor.

We sustainably raise our fish on land in a recirculating aquaculture system. Learn more about how we farm.
-
Land-raised salmon is raised in tanks on land instead of in ocean net pens. At Superior, that means a closed-loop recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) on our farms in Wisconsin and Indiana, where we filter and recycle 99.9% of our water and control the fish's environment from hatch to harvest. It keeps the fish free of the disease, pollutants and treatments common in ocean farming.
Salmon nutrition
-
Yes, specifically EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids. Over 90% of the Atlantic salmon consumed in the U.S. is imported from overseas, and the vast majority was raised in ocean net pen farms. These farms typically follow a commodity market and focus on raising salmon as quickly and cheaply as possible. The easiest way to cut costs when raising salmon this way is to reduce the quality of the feed and compromise sources of fat and protein. Sub-optimal ingredients like vegetable oils and meals from soybeans, canola, wheat, corn and sunflower are commonly used, along with by-products from traditional livestock industries. The trade-off is the quality of the fat and protein in the salmon's diet, which leads to lower amounts of EPA and DHA omega-3s and elevated amounts of ALA omega-3s and omega-6s. This is known as the omega-3:6 ratio, an important benchmark for the overall health of the salmon and the nutritional value of the fish you're consuming.
-
Omega-3 fatty acids are essential polyunsaturated fats that your body cannot make on its own, meaning you must get them from your diet. They are vital building blocks for cell membranes, help regulate inflammation, support brain development and function, and lower heart disease risks, such as by reducing blood triglycerides and blood pressure.
-
There are three types of omega-3s: ALA, EPA and DHA. ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) is a short-chain, plant-based omega-3 fatty acid commonly found in plant oils and certain nuts and seeds. It's primarily used by the body for energy, because only 5–8% of it can be converted to the more beneficial DHA and EPA omega-3s. DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) are both long-chain marine omega-3 fatty acids. Both are found in fatty fish and algae, but their roles in the body differ. EPA acts as a broad-spectrum anti-inflammatory, helps lower triglycerides and supports heart and blood vessel health. DHA is a major structural component of the brain and the retinas, making it critical for infant growth, vision and brain health. Put simply, ALA isn't a "bad" omega-3. The body just converts only a very small percentage of it to the more beneficial DHA and EPA.
-
Omega-6s are also essential polyunsaturated fats that keep cell membranes strong, provide energy, control gene signals and help the blood clot normally. They usually come from vegetable oils, nuts, seeds, eggs, poultry and meat. Importantly, most people get more than enough omega-6s from a standard American diet. Conversely, up to 90% of the U.S. population consumes less than the recommended amount of EPA and DHA. Maybe this is why fish oil supplements are popular, but we prefer to "eat our medicine."
-
Superior salmon does not contain heavy metals or microplastics. We have our fish independently lab tested to verify these claims, and we're confident in the results because our farm is a closed-loop, land-based system where we have complete control over the environment the salmon are raised in.
Storing & cooking
-
Refrigerate or freeze immediately upon delivery. We recommend storing your fillets in the freezer and thawing them thoroughly in the refrigerator when you're ready to prepare them.
-
Carefully open the individual packaging of the salmon and place it on a clean plate in the refrigerator for at least 12 hours. Consume salmon within 1–2 days after thawing.
-
Our fish are deboned by hand, but due to human error, fillets may occasionally contain a bone.
Wholesale

If you're ordering direct from Superior for shipment to your business, we typically use pallet units as a minimum for the most efficient logistics. If you're an independent operator who needs a smaller amount direct from our farms, we can either ship via FedEx or refer you to a regional distributor in your area who can deliver last-mile in case units. Contact us if you have any questions.
-
If you're ordering fresh salmon for shipment directly to your business, we'll need confirmation by Friday at 9am for delivery the following Wednesday through Friday, depending on your location. Custom processing orders, including fresh and frozen programs and value-added products, typically require 2–3 weeks to organize logistics and build inventory. If you're an independent operator ordering case units from a local distributor carrying Superior salmon, your normal lead times should apply to any in-stock products.
-
Superior salmon offers fresh, head-on, gutted Atlantic salmon, fresh skin-on sides and fresh skin-on or skin-off portions.
