Common Questions
-
Yes - specifically EPA and DHA Omega-3 fatty acids. Over 90% of the Atlantic salmon consumed in the U.S. is imported from overseas, the vast majority of which was raised in ocean net pens farms. These farms typically follow a commodity market, and focus on raising salmon as quickly and cheaply as possible. The easiest way to cut costs when raising salmon in this manner is to reduce the quality of the feed and compromise sources of fat and protein. Sub-optimal ingredients like vegetable oils and meals from soy beans, canola, wheat, corn and sunflower are commonly used as well as other by products from traditional animal livestock industries. The trade-off is the quality of the fat and protein in the salmon’s diet which leads to overall lower amounts of EPA and DHA Omega-3s and elevated amounts of ALA Omega-3s and Omega-6s. This is also known as the Omega 3:6 ratio - which is an important benchmark in the overall health of the salmon and the nutritional value of the fish you’re consuming.

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential polyunsaturated fats that your body cannot make on its own, meaning you must get them from your diet. They are vital building blocks for cell membranes, help regulate inflammation, support brain development and function, and lower heart disease risks—such as reducing blood triglycerides and blood pressure.
-
There are three types of Omega-3s: ALA, EPA and DHA. ALA (Alpha-Linoleic Acid) is a short-chain plant based omega-3 fatty acid. It’s commonly found in plant oils, and certain nuts and seeds. It’s primarily used by the body for energy because only 5-8% of it can be converted by the body to DHA and EPA omega-3s which are more beneficial. DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) and EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) are both long-chain marine omega-3 fatty acids. They are both found in fatty fish and algaes but their roles in the body differ. EPA acts as a broad-spectrum anti-inflammatory, helps lower triglycerides and supports heart and blood vessel health. DHA is a major structural component of the brain and the retinas in the eyes, making it critical for infant growth, vision and brain health. Put simply, it’s not that ALA is a “bad” omega-3, it’s just that the body only converts very small percentage of it to the more beneficial DHA and EPA omega-3s.
-
Omega-6s are also essential polyunsaturated fats that keep cell membranes strong, provide energy, control gene signals and help the blood clot normally. They are usually sourced from vegetable oils, nuts, seeds, eggs, poultry and meat. Importantly, most people get more than enough omega-6s from a standard American diet. Conversely, up to 90% of the U.S. population consumes less than the recommended amount of EPA and DHA. Maybe this is why fish oil supplements are popular, but we prefer to “eat our medicine”.

Simply put, No! Superior has complete control over the entire life cycle of our salmon, from hatch to harvest. We raise our fish in a closed loop, land-based aquaculture farm in the heart of the Midewest. The water is constantly filtered and recycled and our entire indoor ecosystem is free of unwanted disease or pathogens. The result is that our salmon are healthy and stress free. Traditional ocean-net pen Atlantic salmon farms do not have the same luck. Entire stocks of salmon can be infected which then require inputs from antibiotics, hormones or pesticides to eradicate.
-
Superior salmon does not contain heavy metals or microplastics. We have our fish independently lab tested to verify these claims and are confident in the results since our farm is a closed loop, land based system where we have complete control over the environment that the salmon are raised in.
